Fire and Flea Market!

So as you all know from watching the news today, Southern California is on fire!
I woke up at 4:00 this morning, because the hurricane force winds were so loud. Next thing I knew our power went out. Then we saw a red glow through the draped window. The hill across the street was on fire. Wind, debris and embers were flying. The fire department came and got the fire pretty much out. We ran around trying to make sure there were no embers to catch anything on fire. At first I thought I better grab my daughter's wedding dress, and my dress and get out of Dodge. Things died down, but still with no power my husband said we should go and get coffee, then go to the flea market as planned.
So we did just that. The flea market is near the ocean, so the air was fresh and clean. Not too much wind either. Later though the wind started up an blew the vendors stuff around. When we got home another fire had started nearby. We weren't in danger of flames or embers, but the smoke, wind, and ash was horrible.

This picture was taken at 3:00 in the afternoon if you can believe it. It is looking across the street from my house. It started to get so dark, that I had to turn lamps on. (Oh yeah, by that time our power was restored)

It is still very windy and smokey here, but it is OK for now. The wind should be better in time for the wedding on Friday. I'm sure you have seen pictures from Malibu. It is was pretty bad.

Here are some more of the flea market pictures that I had promised.

The only thing I bought today was a really great antique wood birdcage. I will show it to you soon.
I guess we will have stories to tell about the last few days before the wedding.
So we are all OK, as are the dresses, and the Bride and Groom.
Have a great start to the new week.

Hello Rosemary
I hadn't heard the news - I spent my weekend volunteering at a flower show - so haven't watched tv in a few days. Happy to hear that you are all ok! This will be an exciting week for you as the wedding date nears :-}

Yes, the whole thing is so scary looking. I saw on one of the morning shows today that there's a jell you can buy that you can spray on your house that protects it from fire for a week or two I think he said. Versus the foam which only protects for 15 min. He said it was $300 for a whole house and available on the internet. I think it well worth the money if you're in one of those danger area.

I hope you continue to be o.k. and I can't wait to see pictures from what I'm sure will be THE most lovely wedding!

I was thinking of you over there to the west, and wondering if the fire was near you. I guess so! I'm hoping I can get home to where I live today, as I've been at the beach this weekend. There are fires everywhere! Scary.

wow! that is crazy! I have never seen anything like it and I have seen plenty : ) I love the last flea market picture, I want everything in it! Also, I always wonder how much that stuff is - like the white shelf towards the front... I wonder about CA flea market prices vs. AR flea market prices...

Thank you for sharing about the fires. I don't think that those of us who aren't there can even come close to imagining what it's like.
Thinking of you as *The Big Day* approaches; I know it will be beautiful, and I look forward to seeing/hearing all about it!
Stay safe!

Rosemary, I had been worried so I was just checking to see if you had posted. We have friends North of San Diego who sent out emails saying they were being evacuated. It is horrible...we lived in So. Cal for over 2 years and I well remember the fires and the air being so think and dark.
Please stay safe and know that I am thinking about you all. I want this to be a wonderful week for you all...and may nothing cause your wedding sweetness to be anything bu glorious!

Hugs,
Sue

oh my god, its unreal, I mean my mom used to tell us stories of when she grew up in California and what it was like with fires earthquakes etc. but when you live your whole life in a little place in England its hard to realise.
Looks like the flea market was way to much fun though.
Hope everything is on plan for wedding
